The LA Times have been talking to James Cameron (AVATAR, ALIENS) on the eve of the AVATAR DVD release, due to hit shelves tomorrow (which also happens to be international Earth Day). During the interview Cameron lets some vital AVATAR sequel plot details slip and confirms the theatrical re-release of AVATAR is arriving [...]
[ April 22, 2010; ] Arriving two days later than the rest of this week’s home video releases – Earth Day, to be exact – is James Cameron’s ecologically-themed science fiction blockbuster AVATAR.
Back in January, I wrote a little editorial (”Conservatives Carp at Avatar“), in which I noted that right-wing “thinkers” and gone off the rails with specious and downright silly arguments about percieved faults with the themes in James Cameron’s blockbuster film. Months later, I see that Cameron has finally fired back, during a press conference [...]
NPR.com notes, with understandable skepticism, that Fox Home Entertainment’s April 22 Blu-ray release of AVATAR will be entirely extras free, allegedly in order to conserve space on the disc. Of course, the space problem will be solved by November, when an “ultimate edition” (presumably loaded with bonus features) will hit stores in time for the Christmas [...]
Mike Fleming at Dealine New York is reporting that David Fincher is reviving HEAVY METAL with the help of James Cameron (AVATAR) and Zack Snyder (WATCHMEN). Based on the famous adult comic book, which previously inspired two films (one in 1981 and a sequel in 2000), HEAVY METAL would be a 3d animated anthology, containing approximately [...]
Zoe Saldana is the Wonder Awards choice for Best Actress, in the Best Pic winner, AVATAR.
It’s Sunday, March 7, and everyone is wondering what the winners will be. Well, wonder no more, because here are the official winners of this year’s Cinefantastique Wonder Awards. Oh sure, other people are tuning into the Oscar telecast to [...]
Due to technical difficulties that have recently restricted access to the Internet, yesterday’s Sense of Wonder column – “Conservative critics carp at Avatar (surprise!)“ was written in some haste, omitting a couple of points I wanted to make. I came back to add an update at the bottom, but the length of the comments seemed worthy of [...]
ABC News has a doozy of an “article” titled “The Politics of ‘Avatar:’ Conservatives Attack Film’s Political Message“. I use the quotations marks around the word article, because Huma Khan’s piece is not really a work of reporting; it’s a big megaphone to amplify conservative voices, whether or not they have anything to say. Their views [...]
For many months now I have been looking forward to the release of James Cameron’s AVATAR. But with all the hype, much of it coming from Cameron himself, I was prepared to be mesmerized by the visual display, but to feel let down by the storyline. Thankfully, the visual elements lived up to the hype, [...]
AVATAR is an enormously entertaining piece of screen spectacle that goes a long way toward redeeming the somewhat debased concept of a Hollywood blockbuster: It is epic in scale and lavish in production, filled with qualities that can only be purchased with big bucks, and yet it never feels like a hollow money pit.
The Wall Street Journal offers an early look at James Cameron’s AVATAR – or, more precisely, a look at some films with elements that prefigure AVATAR. The hit parade includes DRAGONRIDERS OF PERN, ALIENS, DANCES WITH WOLVES, GULLIVER’S TRAVELS and LORD OF THE RINGS.

If we had to pick the five greatest theatrical experiences of our adult life (eliminating childhood, where even the lights going down could give goosebumps) then catching TERMINATOR 2: JUDGMENT DAY on opening day back in July of 1991 would rank highly among them. It’s an amazing thing to walk out of a [...]
