Giallo (2009)

Giallo (2009)

Marked by unpleasant violence and quesitonable humor, Argento’s latest thriller sees the director following his own dark muse, regardless of whether the audience tags along.
Dario Argento’s films have always divided critical and audience opinions. To his supporters, he’s one of the cinema’s supreme visual stylists, his work further marked by a constant willingness to [...]

Romero to Remake Argento’s Deep Red

Romero to Remake Argento’s Deep Red

Director George A Romero
It seems as though George A Romero (NIGHT OF THE LIVING DEAD, MARTIN) is letting the dead rest in pieces, at least for a short while. Variety are reporting that he’s set to remake Dario Argento’s (SUSPIRIA, TENEBRAE) 1975 Italian horror film, DEEP RED. The film is also, drum roll please, set [...]

Dario does Dracula in 3D

Alan Jones – one time London correspondent for Cinefantastique – revealed on his Twitter account today that Italian filmmaker Dario Argento is planning to remake DRACULA in 3D. Filming, which will retain the original novel’s period setting, is supposed to start in January.

Hollywood Reporter reviews “Giallo”

Trade paper Hollywood Reporter has posted a review of GIALLO, which recently screened at a festival in Edinburg. Their assessment is that the film, directed by Dario Argento and starring Adrien Brody,  is a “clunky by-the-numbers Euro-thriller” that “wastes the talents of its star and veteran director.”
This unlikely-on-paper, underwhelming-in-execution collaboration between Oscar winner Brody and [...]

Yellow Fever: Sean Keller on Writing

Yellow Fever: Sean Keller on Writing “Giallo” for Dario Argento

Tired of seeing the same old stuff, co-writers Sean Keller and Jim Agnew believed they knew exactly how to inject some much needed style and substance back into the jugular of the horror genre. The fans of ’70s & ’80s Italian horror-thrillers – known as gialli – scripted an homage, little knowing that the reigning king of the form would choose to direct.

The composer discussions his musical collaboration with the Italian master of horror.
Dario Argento & Marco Werba
Dario Argento has been a legend in Eurohorror cinema since the 1970s, and in many ways his films of that era, which include DEEP RED (1975), SUSPIRIA (1977), TENEBRAE (1982), PHENOMENA (1985) and others, define the giallo form – that uniquely [...]

Do You Like Hitchock? – Watch for Free

Courtesy of the Starz Media YouTube Channel, today we present Dario Argento’s 2005 made-for-television giallo thriller DO YOU LIKE HITCHOCK. As the title implies, DO YOU LIKE HITCHCOCK? deliberately emulates the American Master of Suspense. Fans will recognize plot elements borrowed from several sources, most notably REAR WINDOW. The story follows a young man who rents [...]

Do You Like Hitchcock? - Giallo Film Review

Do You Like Hitchcock? – Giallo Film Review

With this unambitious but entertaining giallo, Argento proves he can still thrill an audience.
The consensus among fans and critics seems to be that Dario Argento’s glory days are behind him, and after the embarrassment that was PHANTOM OF THE OPERA (1998), one could hardly blame long-time followers for abandoning him completely. Yet the new millennium [...]

Two Evil Eyes (1990) - Blu-ray Review

Two Evil Eyes (1990) – Blu-ray Review

This is strange entry in the careers of George A Romero and Dario Argento, as fans expecting an anthology along the lines of Creepshow were instead given essentially 2 almost completely unrelated hour-long features based on stories by Edgar Allen Poe. Romero’s episode is about a wealthy patriarch who dies while under hypnosis; his gold-digging wife [...]

Four Flies on Grey Velvet - DVD Review

Four Flies on Grey Velvet – DVD Review

Having just released an international smash with The Bird with the Crystal Plumage in 1970, Argento must have felt the usual pressure to follow it up with something similar (an issue that his occasional stylistic mentor, Hitchcock himself, had to deal with often). His subsequent two efforts would form a so-called “animal trilogy” – films [...]

Bird with the Crystal Plumage - Blu-ray Review

Bird with the Crystal Plumage – Blu-ray Review

Though its antecedents stretch back to the early ’60s output of Mario Bava, Dario Argento’s The Bird with the Crystal Plumage is almost universally acknowledged as ground zero for both the Italian “Giallo” thriller (so named for the yellow coloring used on the wonderfully lurid covers of the Italian crime novels that inspired them) and [...]

Bird with the Crystal Plumage - A Retrospective Review

Bird with the Crystal Plumage – A Retrospective Review

EDITOR’S NOTE: As Cole, the reluctant time traveller played by Bruce Willis in TWELVE MONKEYS notes, time changes our perception of movies. When you re-view a film, it seems different, but it is the viewer, not the film, that has actually changed. This observation prompts our posting of this review. Dario Argento’s directorial debut, The [...]
