One response to “Richard Matheson: He Was Legend”

What Matheson objected to about the film adaptation of The Shrinking Man was that Universal added “Incredible” to the title, and also restructured the story so that it was told chronologically. (Matheson began the book and screenplay with the battle against the spider and included flashbacks that filled in the back story. At the time, whoever was in charge of the B unit at Universal wanted only chronological storytelling. The same kind of restructuring of the narrative was done with the film TARANTULA as well).

Cinefantastique published one of the best ever Matheson interviews in one of the early print issues, and it is well worth looking up.
