You're so right - I made the classic Western mistake and lumped Tsui Hark's wire work epics with the cheapie chop-socky programmers of the early 70s.

But that one dude with the cleaver during the big alley fight? Pure Shawscope!

I don't think that '70s Shaw Brothers kung-fu movies had much influence on BIG TROUBLE. The real source of inspiration was producer Tsui hark's 1983 opus ZU, WARRIORS OF THE MAGIC MOUNTAIN. This "Fant-Asia" film emphasized myth, legend, magic, and romance (elements that recur in BIG TROULBE) instead of the usual "my clan has been insulted so now I must defend their honor and defeat my rival" storyline of many kung fu films.

ZU also featured a fantasy version of martial arts, using wires to make warriors float through the air as they battled it out - an effect that BIG TROUBLE tries to recreate, using blue-screen, to much lesser effect.
