Box Office: “Race” tops the mountain

It was a good weekend for science fiction, fantasy, and horror films at the box office, with genre titles taking the win, place, and show positions.

Disney’s RACE TO WITCH MOUNTAIN raced to the top of the box office during its debut weekend. Opening in 3,187 North American theatres, the film earned a cool $24.4-million, easily knocking last week’s winner, WATCHMEN into the #2 spot.

All was not bad news for WATCHMEN, however. Even in second place, the film earned $17.82-million during its sophomore session, yielding a two-week total of $85.75-million.

LAST HOUSE ON THE LEFT, the weekend’s other debut genre film, ended up in third place with $14.12-million, earned on 2,401 screens.

The only other holdover title to earn a slot in the Top Ten was CORALINE, which dropped from #7 to #9, earning $2.72-million. After six weeks of release, the total U.S. gross is $69.24-million.
