Tron 2 Casting News

Hollywood Reporter reveals that TRON 2, the sequel to 1982’s box office flop TRON, has cast actresses Olivia Wilde and Beau Garrett, who previously appeared together in TURISTAS. Josephe Kosinksi takes over the director’s chair from Steven Lisberger, who will co-produce the sequel with Sean Bailey and Jeff Silver. Production is expected to start in spring.

The new movie is acting as a “next chapter.” Plot details are being guarded closely, but Wilde will play a worker in the virtual world who tries to help fight Master Control Program, the villainous intelligence protocol that was the nemesis in the original film.

The film generated some buzz when test footage was screened at Comic-Con earlier this year. What seems to be lost in the hoopla is that TRON, despite its historical importance in terms of utilizing computer graphics,  is not a good film. The virtual world setting may have had potential for a sequel, but that vein has been pretty well tapped by the MATRIX trilogy. My suspicion is that TRON 2 will shape up as the next SPEED RACER.
