Sorcerer casts about for an apprentice

Variety tells us that Jay Baruchel , who co-starred in TROPIC THUNDER, is negotiating to play the title role in a live-action version of THE SORCERER’S APPRENTICE.. Jerry Bruckheimer’s live-action film for Walt Disney Pictures will star Nicolas Cage as the sorcerer. Jon Turtletaub will direct from a screenplay by Lawrence Konner and Mark Rosenthal, which was revised by  Matt Lopez. The modern-day story follows a wizard in New York who is searching for an apprentice. Cage is co-producing. Baruchel’s other upcoming credits include voicing the lead character in the upcoming animated DreamWorks film HOW TO TRAIN YOUR DRAGON.

Walt Disney, of course, has previously filmed “The Sorcerer’s Apprentice,” as one of the musical vignettes in their classic film FANTASIA. The studio’s animated star Micky Mouse was cast as the apprentice who gets into trouble using magic while his master is away.
