Cybersurfing: Phoonk blows away competition in India

PHOONK may not sound - at least to Western ears - like an auspcious horror title (the English translation is “blast,” “blow,” or “breath”), but the International Business Times has an article detailing the success of Ram Gopal Varma’s horror film, which is about a wealthy real estate developer bedeviled by supernatural forces that shake the very foundations of their beliefs.

Phoonk, says Varma, is not a ghost story but a story about supernatural and evil forces. “The film is not about any spirit or pretatma (spirit). It’s a black magic story. The film talks about the evil forces that are out to kill a family,” the director said.

Incidentally, Varma is an atheist himself but does not rule out the possibility of the existence of dark forces. “I am too small to say that these things don’t exist. It’s debatable. If it didn’t happen to me, it doesn’t mean that I refuse to believe in them,” he said.

“It is also the story of a fanatical devotee who is forced to turn her back on God in the face of traumatic experiences,” he said.

Critics have not been kind, and the article itself compares PHOONK unfavorably to Western films like THE EXORCIST, THE OMEN, and THE SIXTH SENSE, but the box office results have been terrific, apparently due to some clever marketing ploys, such as challenging viewers to sit through the film, alone, until the very end, for a chance to win a prize.
