Box Office: Hancock flies to #1

HANCOCK is a superhero success at the box office

Despite largely negative reviews, HANCOCK zoomed into the #1 position at the box office over the four-day holiday weekend. The superhero comedy, starring Will Smith, celebrated the fourth of July by opening on Wednesday, in 3,965 theatres, which gave it an added box office boost. The three-day Friday-to-Sunday estimate was $66.00-million. Including ticket sales from the early opening, the total swelled to $107.32-million. WALL-E - which made its debut at #1 last week - took a hit but kept on going, earning $33.42-million in second place. That yielded an impressive two-week total of $128.13-million.

Also dropping a notch was WANTED, which earned $20.61-million in third place during its sophomore session. U.S. total now stands at $90.78-million.

GET SMART slipped from third to fourth place in its third week of release. The spy spoof added $11.13-million to its three-week total of $98.12-million.

KUNG FU PANDA’s martial arts skills were not enough to prevent it from dropping to fifth place in its fifth week. The $7.50-million weekend raised its total to $193.40-million.

THE INCREDIBLE HULK went from #5 to #6 with weekend earnings of $4.98-million. Having earned $124.92-million so far, the sequel is still shy of the $132.16-million U.S. gross of its predecessor, HULK.

Unlike the preceding holdover titles, INDIANA JONES AND THE KINGDOM OF THE CRYSTAL SKULL managed to holds its position from the previous weekend, whipping its way back into #7. The latest adventure in the Jones saga added $3.94-million to its seven-week total of $306.59-million. If the film holds on strong for another few weekends, it could surpass the $311.76-million of IRON MAN (currently in twelfth place) to become the biggest box office grosser of this summer, which would also make it the #1 film of the year.
