Cybersurfing: Building Wall-E

Variety reporter Peter Debruge gets Pixar animator Angus MacLane to reveal “How to Build a Better Robot.” Debrue breaks MacLane’s description of creating the mis-matched romantic robots of WALL-E:

  • Begin with a box.
  • Give him functional “arms” and “legs.”
  • Add eyes for expression.
  • Now imagine the opposite extreme.
  • Create a complimentary personality.

MacLane sums up:

”WALL•E represents the notion of who people actually are: The guy has dreams, and he has chores; he’s not the best at everything he does, but he’s good at his job. Just as a superhero team would have a bruiser character, that would be WALL•E, whereas EVE is a much more aggressive hero.”
