Laserblast: Teeth, Twister, MST-3K
Not a big week for sci-fi, fantasy, and horror home video releases, but there are a few items that should keep cult fans happy: a low-budget horror film making its first appearance on disc; a Hollywood blockbuster upgraded to Blu-ray format; and the feature-film version of a hip TV show returning to home video after being out of print for years. Find them all in our store. Up first is the DVD debut of TEETH, a low-budget horror satire that earned a good deal of critical praise when it received a limited theatrical release earlier this year. In case you hadn’t heard, it’s about a girl who has teeth…ahem, down there. The film arrives on disc with a handful of bonus features: audio commentary by writer-director Mitchell Lichtenstein; behind-the-scenes featurette; deleted scenes with optional commentary; TV spots and trailers.
TWISTER gets another home video release, this time on Blu-ray, which can show off its special effects like no other home video format. This new edition features several bonus features, some ported from previous DVD releases, some new. There is an audio commentary by director Jan De Bont and effects supervisor Stefen Fangmeier; a new half-hour documentary, “Chasing the Storm: Twister Revisted;” a “Making of Twister” featurette, and another called “Anatomy of a Twister;” the History Channel documentary “Nature Tech: Tornadoes;” two trailers; and a music video for the Van Halen song heard on the soundtrack, “Human Being.” It’s no secret that this film was not strong on plot; its effectiveness derived almost totally from the excitement of the spectacular action, achieved with some stunning special effects. The impact was considerably diminished on home video; even previous releases on laserdisc and DVD did not quite live up to the theatrical experience. If anything can recapture that impact at home, it is Blu-ray.
Fans of MYSTERY SCIENCE THEATER 3000, can rejoice at the DVD re-release of MYSTERY SCIENCE THEATER 3000: THE MOVIE - title that has been officially out of print for several years. Previous official home video releases (on VHS, laserdisc, and DVD) were somewhat lacking (they failed to include any of the available bonus materials - a new version of the television show’s theme song, a deleted scene, and an alternate ending that later showed up on fan-made bootleg discs), so here is a chance for the distributor to make amends. The film itself is both better and worse than the television series that inspired it: the film features some of the best barbs the crew of the Satellite of Love ever flung at a deserving target (in this case the 1950s sci-fi relic THIS ISLAND EARTH), but the host segments linking them together are often weak, even lame. Fans of course will forgive this, but if you are trying to get a non-fan friend of yours interested in the franchise, you might want to chapter-stop to the good stuff or risk losing their interest immediately.
