		<description>Steve, I wonder what &quot;possessed&quot; her to such a poor choice.  It certainly didn&#039;t help her career which was in a downturn at the time.  In fact, after this film and a failed television series both in the same year, she didn&#039;t work again for almost five years.</description>

William Peter Blatty has stated that, when writing his novel THE EXORCIST, he had doubts about his ability to create a believable female characterization, so he based Chris MacNeil on his friend Shirley MacLaine. The actress was not happy with the book - though not because the character was based on her: according to Blatty, MacLaine accused him of stealing a photo of her daughter to use for the cover art. (Blatty denies this, and the image is so dark and blurry it is impossible to identify the subject.) When the book was turned into a movie, MacLaine was offered the lead role, but she turned it down; instead, she opted to appear in the rival possession film, JOEL DELANEY.</description>
