The actress was not happy with the book - though not because the character was based on her: according to Blatty, MacLaine accused him of stealing a photo of her daughter to use for the cover art. (Blatty denies this, and the image is so dark and blurry it is impossible to identify the subject.) When the book was turned into a movie, MacLaine was offered the lead role, but she turned it down; instead, she opted to appear in the rival possession film, JOEL DELANEY.
