Box Office: “Horton” Hears Ticket Sales

As expected, the 20th Century Fox debut of DR. SUESS’ HORTON HEARS A WHO easily scored top position at the box office. Opening in 3,954 theatres, the animated film earned a whopping $45.1-million, nearly three times as much as the runner-up.

The weekend’s other nationwide genre debut, DOOMSDAY, fared poorly on 1,936 screens, earning only $4.74-million. FUNNY GAMES, opening in limited release, did not make the Top Ten.

Last weekend’s winner, 10,000 B.C., dropped to second place in its sophomore session, earning $16.42-million. That added up to a two-week total of $61.22-million.

As for returning sci-fi, fantasy, and horror titles…

THE SPIDERWICK CHRONICLES dropped from #6 to #10, earning $2.39-million and raising its five-week total to 465.4-million.

JUMPER fell out of the Top Ten, dropping to #11 (down three slots from last week). The film added $2.14-million to its five-week total of $75.77-million.
