“Spider” gets a “Jump” on Cupid Day

In “Cupid Brings Early bows,” the Hollywood Reporter notes the proliferation of films released a day early on Thursday - Valentine’s Day - instead of Friday, including THE SPIDERWICK CHRONICLES and JUMPER. With the weekend already a four-day holiday (due to Presiden’ts Day on Monday), studios are obviously hoping for big box office, and adding an extra day of release may fill their coffers even more.

JUMPER is expected to be the top ticket seller with $30-million. SPIDERWICK predictions estimate the weekend take at $25-million.

Meanwhile, DIARY OF THE DEAD will wait until Friday to open in 42 theatres around the country.
