Horror goes highbrow – “Diary of Dead” & French thillers at Lincoln Film Center

A trio of upcoming horror films will screen at New York’s Film Society of Lincoln Center in February: DIARY OF THE DEAD, FRONTIERE(S), and INSIDE. The film’s are part of the “Film Comments Selects” series, in which the critics from highbrow magazine select low-profile movies that might otherwise be overlooked.

DIARY OF THE DEAD is the latest zombie opus from George A. Romero. Needless to say, Robin Wood is Film Comment’s champion of the movie, which he calls “the series’ supreme achievement.” (In a recent article, Wood said that the last great horror film was Romero’s 1985 DAY OF THE DEAD).

A L’INTERIEUR (INSIDE): Alysson Paradis as the pregnant woman menaced by a mysterious intruder. The other two titles are violent French thrillers that rely on graphic violence rather than supernatural elements for their inclusion in the horror genre. FRONTIERE(S) is about some crooks who take refuge in the wrong isolated house; it was supposed to be part of last year’s After Dark horror fest, until it ran into ratings problems (it should get a platform release this year, in unrated form). INSIDE (A’L’INTERIEUR) is the story of a pregnant woman harassed by a mysterious female assailant; gore hounds will adore it, but other other fans will find it pointless.

Many other titles will be screening during the festival. The dates for the horror films are:

  • February 14: DIARY OF THE DEAD at 10:30pm
  • February 22: FRONTIERE(S) at 9:00pm
  • February 26: INSIDE at 4:00pm
  • February 27: FRONTIERE(S) at 2:15pm; INSIDE at 6:30pm
