Unlike the source novel, whose point is that normalcy is defined by the majority, Heston’s character remains the unequivocal standard of of old guard authority, whose rightness is unquestioned. The film makes an attempt to seem relevant to 1970s audiences by including a black woman and what looks vaguely like a commune of human survivors, but despite their counter-culture appearance they all bow down to Neville’s authority.
