Box Office: Genre squeezed out
The Friday-to-Saturday frame of January 11-13 was a rare weekend in which science-fiction, fantasy, and horror films were squeezed out of the win, place, and show positions, which went to THE BUCKET LIST, FIRST SUNDAY, and JUNO respectively. The one new genre release, IN THE NAME OF THE KING: A DUNGEON SEIGE TALE, failed to find a slot in the Top Ten.
Among returning titles, the only two Top Ten entries were:
- #4: ALVIN AND THE CHIPMUNKS – $$9.1-million/$187-million total
- #6: I AM LEGEND – $8.13-million/240.23-million total
- #7: ONE MISSED CALL - $6.13-million/$20.64-million total
SWEENEY TODD: THE DEMON BARBAR OF FLEET STREET slipped from #9 to #12, where it earned $3.4-million. After four weekends of release, the film’s U.S. total stands at an anemic $44.07-million. At this point, the film will have to rely on its recent Golden Globe wins and possible Oscar nominations, to boost its box office fortunes.
