AFI Top Ten Sci-Fi & Fantasy

The American Film Institute, which likes to assemble lists of the 100 Best Films, will be singing a new variation of its favorite tune this year, picking Top Ten films in Ten different genres, including animation, fantasy, and science-fiction. Sadly, horror is not being considered.

One of the ten best fantasy films?

Nominees include PINOCCHIO (1941) and SHREK (2001) for Animation; KING KONG (1933) and LORD OF THE RINGS (2001) for Fantasy; and WAR OF THE WORLDS (1953) and THE MATRIX (1999) for Science-Fiction. (Unclear is whether the entire LORD OF THE RINGS trilogy is being considered as one long movie.)
