Best Reviewed Genre Films of 2007

The Movie Blog points out that RATATOUILLE scored a 96% critical approval rating on the Rotten Tomatoes website - the highest of any widely released film last year.  Other genre titles to rank in the Wide Release category were ENCHANTED (#9) and ZODIAC (#10).

The top reviewed horror films were:

  1. GRINDHOUSE
  2. 1408
  3. 28 WEEKS LATER
  4. THE MIST
  5. BLACK SHEEP.

The top reviewed sci-fi/fantasy films were:

  1. HARRY POTTER AND THE ORDER OF THE PHOENIX
  2. STARDUST
  3. SUNSHINE
  4. BEOWULF
  5. WRISTCUTTERS: A LOVE STORY (huh?)

The numbers are a bit depressing. One expects audiences to sometimes embrace glossy but hollow films like HARRY POTTER, but critics should show a little more discernment. GRINDHOUSE is a misstep, and THE MIST is pretty much a disaster. If that were the best the genre cold do, it would be time to call it quits.
