Critics nominate Sweeney
Over at About.Com’s Sci-Fi/Fantasy Blog, Mark Wilson sifts through this year’s nominations by the Broadcast Film Critics Association and finds the handful of fantasy film titles to earn recognition. ENCHANTED received four nominations, including Best Song (”That’s How You Know”), Best Actress (Amy Adams), and Best Score (Alan Menken). Other nominations include:
- TIN MAN was nominated for in the made-for-television movie category.
- BEOWULF was nominated for Animated Feature
- Dakota Blue Richards (THE GOLDEN COMPASS) and AnnaSophia Robb (BRIDGE TO TERABITHIA) were nominated for Best Young Actress.
- ENCHANTED, THE GOLDEN COMPASS, and HARRY POTTER AND THE ORDER OF THE PHOENIX were nominated for Best Family Film.
Wilson leaves out several titles that should arguably be included as “genre” nominees:
- SWEENEY TODD for Best Picture, Best Director, Best Actor (Johnny Depp), Best Young Actor, and Best Acting Ensemble.
- THE ORPHANAGE for Best Foreign Language Film.
- BEE MOVIE and RATATOUILLE for Best Animated Film.
In fact, the really big news for genre fans is that SWEENEY TODD got five nominations, which bodes well for its chances when the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences gets around to voting for the Oscar nominations.
