Box Office: Treasure #1 but AVP2 bows big

NATIONAL TREASURE: BOOK OF SECRETS was the big winner over the long holiday weekend, earning a massive $65.44-million from Friday to Tuesday, ALIENS VS. PREDATOR: REQUIEM was almost as impressive: opening in 2,563 theatres on Christmas Day, the film earned one-day gross of $9.52-million – enough to land in the #7 position at the U.S. box office.

The weekend’s other new flicks fared less well: SWEENEY TODD, opening in a relatively modest 1,249 theatres, earned $13.64-million – good enough for fifth place. THE WATER HORSE: LEGEND OF THE DEEP opened in more than twice as many engagements (2,772) but landed at $15, with meager earnings of $2.39-million.

As for returning sci-fi, fantasy, and horror flicks…

I AM LEGEND was in second place with $47.69-million, raising its two-week total to $150.95-million.

THE GOLDEN COMPASS pointed to eighth place, where the film earned $6.95-million, raising its three-week total in the U.S. to $51.38-million.

ENCHANTED dropped out of the Top Ten, falling to #11, but still earned $6.24-million over the long weekend, raising its five-week total just past the $100-million blockbuster mark.

FRED CLAUS slid down the chimney to #19 with a weekend gross of $1.19-million. After seven weeks in U.S. theatres, the film has earned $70.98-million.
