Monster news or mountain out of mole hill?
For esoteric reasons known only to those of the inner sanctum, Bloody-Disgusting.Com makes a big deal out of the rather prosaic announcement (reported in Variety) that Son Pictures is launching a new label called “Stage 6 Films,” which wil produce and/or release approximately fifteen movies a year, on budgets ranging from $1-million to $10-million, mostly for the direct-to-video market.
Bloody-Disgusting thinks Stage 6 will likely churn out horror franchises, but a look at the Variety article shows that this is not a genre-specific label. Their upcoming titles include thrillers and action flicks like ART OF WAR 2, CONSPIRACY, and FELON.
Mixed in are a handful of genre titles: THE LODGER, starring Alfred Molina (apparently a remake of the 1940s classic); a sequel to STARSHIP TROOPERS starring Casper Van Dien; and a prequel to VACANCY (as if we really needed that). The label also promises to “leverage” Sony’s “vast library of studios films” such as DADDY DAY CARE and I KNOW WHAT YOU DID LAST SUMMER.
