Resident Evil: zombies are not extinct at the box office

RESIDENT EVIL: EXTINCTION chomped its way into first place, returning genre films to ascendancy at the box office after a dry spell that followed HALLOWEEN. Sony Pictures’ latest zombie-fest based on the hit videogame made its debut in 2,828 theatres, where it earned an estimated $24-million.

GOOD LUCK CHUCK, another debut, also warmed its way into the hearts of film-goers, taking second place. The Lionsgate fantasy-comedy – about a man who is hexed so that all the women he dates find love with the next guy – opened on 2,612 screens, selling $14-million worth of tickets.

As for holdovers, there was little good news.

Dropping from #5 to #10, DRAGON WARS earned $2.2-million during its sophomore session, for a two-week total of $8.4-million.

Making an exit from the Top Ten, HALLOWEEN fell from sixth to twelfth place, where it earned $2.16-million. After four weekends in U.S. theatres, the film’s total stands at $54.59-million.
