Box Office: Invasion thwarted by Superbad comedy
This was a rare weekend when not a single fantasy, horror or science-fiction film managed to find a slot in the win, place, or show positions at the box office, which were taken by SUPERBAD, RUSH HOUR 3, and THE BOURNE ULTIMATUM.
The week’s one new genre film debut, THE INVASION (a remake of INVASION OF THE BODY SNATCHERS, starring Nicole Kidman) landed in fifth place with a dismal $6-million. The film, which has been on the shelf for awhile, reportedly went through major post-production tampering to increase its audience appeal, but the effort did not pay off.
As for other genre films in the marketplace…
THE SIMPSONS MOVIE remained strong in fourth place, down one notch from the previous weekend. It earned $6.67-million, raising its four-week total to an impressive $165.12-million.
STARDUST fell from fourth to sixth place, where it earned $5.24-million in its sophomore session, for a two-week total of $19.09-million.
UNDERDOG rant from sixth to eighth place, where it fetched $3.61-million. After three weeks of release, the film has buried $31.69-million worth of tickets.
HARRY POTTER AND THE ORDER OF THE PHOENIX materialized at #9, down one slot from the previous week. Harry waved his wand over $3.54-million in ticket sales. After six weeks in theatres, the film has conjured a total of $278.65-million.
