Box Office: Bourne takes out Simpsons, Underdog in third

It was a rare summer weekend when the #1 position at the U.S. box office was not held by a science-fiction, fantasy, or horror title. THE BOURNE ULTIMATUM finished first, with a recording-breaking weekend debut of $70.1-million, earned in 3,660 venues. That was the biggest August opening ever, topping any James Bond title and the previous two BOURNE pics. Last week’s winner, THE SIMPSONS MOVIE, dropped into second place, where it added $25.6-million to its whopping two-week total of$128.6-million. The weekend’s other newcomer, UNDERDOG, lapped its way into third with $12-million, earned in 3,013 theatres.

As for other genre titles in the Top Ten…

HARRY POTTER AND THE ORDER OF THE PHOENIX materialized in 6th place, down from 3rd last week. The fifth film in the franchise added $9.3-million to its four-week total of $260.8-million

TRANSFORMERS mutated from #6 to #8, with $5.95-million. After five weekends in theatres, the Michael Bay flick has amassed $296.3-million.

Meanwhile, Disney-Pixar’s RATATOUILLE dropped out of the Top Ten, skittering from 7th place to #11. The computer-animated comedy added $4.02-million to its six-week total of $188.28-million.
